Virgin Australia is taking another step forward in offering flexibility to its domestic passengers. The Australian airline is now expanding its “Fly Ahead” option; which allows passengers to change flights on the same day; to Economy Flex ticket holders, with no change fees or fare differences.
Fly Ahead isn’t new to Virgin Australia: the feature was launched a few months ago but was previously reserved for the most loyal members of the Velocity loyalty program; namely, Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Plus members. Now, it’s available to all passengers who have booked an Economy Flex ticket, regardless of their loyalty tier.
Specifically, eligible travelers can request, on the day of their trip, to board an earlier flight on the same route via the Virgin Australia app or directly at the airport, subject to seat availability. On busy routes between Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, travelers can request an earlier flight up to two hours before their originally booked departure time. On other routes within the domestic network, passengers can request the first available flight preceding theirs.
Requests made through the app must be submitted at least 60 minutes before the departure of the desired flight, compared to 40 minutes for a request made at the airport, as long as check-in is still open. However, if baggage has already been checked, the request cannot be made. Up to three traveling companions listed on the same reservation can also benefit from the change.
Meeting the needs of business travelers:
According to Virgin Australia, more than 44,000 passengers have already used this option to move up their flights over the past twelve months, saving a total of 143,000 hours of waiting time at the airport. The airline also cites a study indicating that 65% of business travelers consider flexibility a key factor in choosing an airline.
Libby Minogue, Group Director at Virgin Australia, announced: “This expansion directly addresses customer feedback, particularly from business travelers who are asking for more flexibility and control when their plans change during the day.”
A first in Australia:
Virgin Australia has thus become the first Australian airline to include this type of free same-day flight change directly in its Economy Flex fare, with no additional cost or fare difference to pay. This development is part of the airline’s broader strategy, which has recently seen a surge in technological initiatives aimed at improving the customer experience: baggage tracking, a unified flight search tool, and faster airport check-in procedures.
For business customers and small and medium-sized enterprises; particularly members of the Virgin Australia Business Flyer program; this new feature enhances the appeal of the Economy Flex fare, which until now has been more expensive than other economy fare classes but now offers greater added value in terms of flexibility.
The standard fare conditions for the Economy Flex fare continue to apply to any other changes or cancellations to a reservation.
