Wellington International Airport in New Zealand experienced major disruptions on Sunday. Nearly 200 flights were canceled at the airport due to strong winds sweeping through the country’s capital.
Gusts reaching 100 km/h forced several airlines to suspend operations to and from the airport, including the Australian low-cost carrier Jetstar Airways, according to the New Zealand media outlet 1news.co.nz.
In response to these exceptional weather conditions, Metservice—the national weather agency—issued an orange alert for the Wellington region, the Marlborough coast, and Taranaki.
Flights expected to resume tomorrow:
Despite the extent of the disruptions, a spokesperson for Wellington Airport sought to reassure travelers by announcing that: “The situation is expected to return to normal tomorrow morning, and passengers will then be able to catch their flights.”
